UN Sustainable Development Goals · A New Kind of Instrument

Not a Treaty of Promises.
A Diplomatic System That Fixes the Conflict.

Every major climate agreement in history has been a treaty — a negotiated promise between parties with competing interests, enforced by political will that changes with every election cycle. Treaties can be withdrawn from, watered down, missed, or ignored. The Umpireal Continuous Flow Digital Junction™ is something different: a physical instrument that resolves the conflict between three sovereign interests simultaneously, permanently, and without requiring any of them to concede anything to the others. Physics does the enforcement.

Sovereign 1 · AI Industry
AI & Data Companies
Need: compute power at scale, near population, now. Grid capacity is the binding constraint. Planning permission takes years. Land near cities is scarce and expensive.
Current reality: lobbying for grid connections that take 5–10 years. Building campuses 60 ms from the people they serve. Consuming 200–500 MW per site with no thermal recovery.
Node gives them: 1 MW edge compute per junction · sub-5 ms latency · 100-year civil host · no grid bottleneck · HaaS economics
Sovereign 2 · Power Grid
Grid Operators & Utilities
Need: to balance increasing renewable intermittency, reduce curtailment costs, defer expensive grid reinforcement, and serve new load without new transmission.
Current reality: curtailing wind and solar during overproduction at high cost. Grid reinforcement projects take 7–12 years. No distributed storage at junction scale exists.
Node gives them: 4 MWh BESS per junction · curtailment absorption · frequency response · flexible compute load · 100 MWh per 25-node network
Sovereign 3 · Municipality
Councils & Road Authorities
Need: statutory CO₂ reduction targets, heat island mitigation, congestion relief, and aging infrastructure renewal — with budgets that cannot fund all three simultaneously.
Current reality: transport is the hardest sector to decarbonise. Heat island effects worsen yearly. Junction upgrades consume capital with no revenue return.
Node gives them: 2,500 t CO₂/yr · reduced street heat · congestion eliminated · territory fees · SDG evidence · climate plan compliance
The Resolution

"Three sovereign interests — AI companies, grid operators, and municipalities — that currently operate in separate silos, each frustrated by the others. The Umpireal node resolves all three simultaneously, from the same 350 m² footprint, without any party conceding anything to the others. The people and nature in between get the outcome of a negotiated settlement without the negotiation. Physics enforces what politics cannot."

Mechanism Comparison

Every Climate Treaty
Has the Same Fatal Flaw.

From Kyoto to Paris to COP30, the architecture is the same: sovereign nations make voluntary commitments, enforcement relies on political continuity, and targets are set in future tense. The Umpireal node operates on a fundamentally different architecture.

Climate Treaty / Agreement
Requires political consensus between competing sovereign interests before any action is taken
Targets are promises set in future tense — subject to every election cycle between now and the deadline
Enforcement relies on reputational pressure and voluntary compliance — no physical mechanism
Can be withdrawn from overnight (Paris Agreement, 2017; re-entered 2021; withdrawn again 2025)
Delivers nothing directly to people or nature — outcome depends on downstream policy implementation
Benefits accrue to atmosphere over decades — no immediate local impact measurable by the parties who signed
Umpireal Free-Flow Node
Resolves competing interests simultaneously — no party needs to concede to another before it works
Outcomes are immediate and permanent from day one — the junction either flows or it doesn't
Physics enforces the outcome — 2,500 tCO₂ prevented per node per year without political continuity
Cannot be withdrawn from — a built junction structure operates for 100 years regardless of who is in government
Delivers directly to people: cleaner air, cooler streets, faster junctions, from the day the node opens
Every node is a unilateral act of permanent improvement — no consensus required to deploy the next one
The Energy Physics · Why Nature Wins

The Junction Is Already
the Most Energy-Dense Site on the Landscape.

We build dams that permanently flood valleys. We declare nuclear exclusion zones the size of counties. We cover farmland in solar panels. Meanwhile the junction — already built, already in the city, already consuming energy at extraordinary density — runs backwards and nobody measures it. Until now.

What This Means for Nature

Every megawatt-hour prevented at a junction is a megawatt-hour that didn't need a dam, a cooling tower, an exclusion zone, or an acre of solar panels. The distributed Umpireal network of 25 nodes prevents the equivalent annual energy output of a 40-acre solar farm — from infrastructure footprints that already exist, on roads already built, with no new land taken from nature, agriculture, or communities. That is what a distributed win for nature actually looks like.

The People and Nature in Between

The Ones Who Don't Get
a Seat at the Treaty Table.

When AI companies, grid operators, and municipalities negotiate, the people breathing the exhaust and the ecosystems absorbing the CO₂ are not in the room. The node delivers to them directly — no intermediary, no policy pipeline, no waiting for the next COP.

UN Sustainable Development Goals · Primary Alignment

Six Goals. Quantified Evidence.
Not Six Coloured Icons.

Umpireal aligns to six SDGs where the evidence is direct, quantified, and verifiable against the published model. Each goal below maps to the specific UN target it addresses and the specific metric the node delivers against it. No greenwashing. No aspirational language. Evidenced physics.

13
Climate Action — Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
Target 13.2 — Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning
Each node prevents 2,484–4,863 tCO₂/yr (speed-zone dependent, tank basis) — a measurable, verifiable annual reduction that maps directly onto local authority statutory Climate Action Plans. Councils can count nodes as line items. The reduction does not depend on behaviour change, subsidy, or technology adoption by road users.
2,484 t CO₂/yr · 50 km/h node · 4,863 t · 100 km/h node · verified model IE 2025/0540
11
Sustainable Cities and Communities — Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
Target 11.2 — Provide safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems
The free-flow junction eliminates the stop-start cycle for all road users simultaneously. Pedestrians and cyclists gain a grade-separated crossing within the BÉAR Crossing geometry — the first infrastructure that improves active travel provision as a by-product of eliminating vehicle queues. Urban heat island studies (Liu et al. 2022; Delhi 2024) confirm traffic reduction materially lowers street-level temperatures — the node achieves this without reducing traffic volume.
1.62 MW street heat prevented · ~2,500 tCO₂/yr · grade-separated active travel · 100-year structure
7
Affordable and Clean Energy — Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy
Target 7.3 — Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency
The Momentum Tax™ — the fuel burned returning zero useful work at every red light — is the largest single category of avoidable energy waste in the transport system. The node eliminates it. The 4 MWh BESS per node absorbs renewable curtailment during overproduction and provides frequency response services — converting stranded clean energy into stored capacity rather than wasting it. A 25-node network holds 100 MWh of distributed grid-connected storage.
8.84–17.30 GWh prevented per junction/yr · 4 MWh BESS · 100 MWh per 25-node network
9
Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure — Build resilient infrastructure and foster innovation
Target 9.1 — Develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure to support economic development
The CFDJ is a new category of civil infrastructure — the first to integrate transport momentum preservation, AI edge compute, battery energy storage, and thermal recovery into a single precast structure. Patent application IE 2025/0540, PCT in progress. The telephone-exchange network topology distributes AI compute across the road network rather than concentrating it in vulnerable centralised campuses, creating infrastructure that is inherently resilient and redundant.

3
Good Health and Well-Being — Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
Target 3.9 — Reduce deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution
Eliminating idle burn removes NOx, particulate matter, and waste heat at street level — precisely where pedestrians, cyclists, and nearby residents are exposed. EuroMOMO confirmed 10,000+ excess deaths in Europe during the late June 2026 heatwave alone (Reuters, 13 July 2026). The urban heat island lockdown studies (Liu et al. 2022; Delhi 2024; 21 Middle Eastern cities 2022) establish the direct causal link between traffic stop-start cycles and elevated urban temperatures. The node addresses the source, not the symptom.
NOx and PM eliminated at idle · 1.62 MW street heat prevented · 10,000+ deaths · June 2026 alone
12
Responsible Consumption and Production — Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
Target 12.2 — Achieve sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources
The Momentum Tax™ is the most wasteful pattern of energy consumption in the daily transport system — fuel refined from crude oil, transported, and burned to produce zero useful mechanical work. The well-to-wheel basis (JEC methodology) shows that every litre prevented at a junction also avoids the upstream energy cost of extracting, refining, and distributing it — adding a further 20% to the energy saved. Prevention requires no resource substitution, no technology adoption, and no consumer behaviour change.
921K litres/yr prevented · 50 km/h EU baseline · +20% WTW uplift · USD 5 trillion Momentum Tax™ globally
Methodology note

SDG alignment assessed against direct, quantified, verifiable evidence only. Goals 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 10, 14, 15, 16, and 17 are not claimed — the node does not address them primarily and claiming them would dilute the credibility of those it does address. The Distributed Win · Economy & Nature

Every Node Is a
Unilateral Act of Permanent Improvement.

The network effect compounds in every direction simultaneously. Each additional node added to the network improves the AI compute tier, deepens the grid storage pool, increases the municipal CO₂ reduction count, and prevents another 2,500 tonnes of atmospheric carbon — independently, without requiring coordination with any other node or any other party.

For Economies
A New Infrastructure Asset Class
Territory licensing, compute revenue, grid services, district heating, and carbon credits from a single civil structure. The junction stops being a cost centre and starts generating €3–12M NOI per year. The economy wins at municipal scale, regional scale, and national scale simultaneously — through the same network of road junctions that already exists.
For Nature
Prevention Without Sacrifice
No valley flooded. No exclusion zone declared. No farmland converted. No new transmission corridor cut through habitat. The 43 MWh/m² energy liability at each junction is resolved on the existing road footprint — the land cost of the energy transition, for this node, is zero. That is what a genuine distributed win for nature looks like: not a protected area, but a fixed liability.
For People
Day One. No Pipeline.
The junction flows from the day the node opens. The air is cleaner, the street is cooler, the queue is gone. No policy implementation required. No downstream programme of work. No awareness campaign. The benefit is physical and immediate — delivered directly to the person who was idling in that queue yesterday, whether they know the SDG number or not.

"The great climate agreements of the 20th and 21st centuries were treaties — statements of intent between parties who all had to agree before anything happened. The Umpireal CFDJ™ is an infrastructure instrument. It doesn't need everyone to agree. It just needs to be built. And once built, the physics is irrevocable."
